Until 2012, the land on which De Ceuvel now sits was heavily polluted from its days as an industrial shipping yard. Today, it is one of the most sustainable developments in Europe. A self-described “playground for sustainable technologies”, De Ceuvel uses self-sustaining technologies to remain energy efficient and has phyto-remediating plants to clean the soil. The space is home to a dozen shored houseboats which are used as offices for creative entrepreneurs. There is also a sustainable cafe and a soon-to-be bed and breakfast.
