The Chemotuin, or chemotherapy garden, opened at Tergooi hospital in Hilversum in June 2015. Pieter van den Berg, an oncologist at the hospital, created the garden as a therapeutic measure for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Patients can walk, sit or lie in the garden while receiving the therapy, herewith reducing the amount of stress and negative emotions associated with the regimen. The ambition of such a garden is to create a more pleasant, healthy and less clinical environment in which to undergo an already stressful and uncertain treatment. In the future, the hospital hopes to have enough information and research about outdoor therapy to map out and establish what positive effects such therapy can have on patients. In order to achieve this, Tergooi is working together with Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and the Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre in Amsterdam to conduct further scientific research.
