After winning a design competition run by SIGN, a horticultural innovation foundation, engineering students from the Delft University of Technology received funding to create a prototype of the Plant Bag. It’s a backpack specifically designed for children who breath polluted air everyday in cities such as Beijing. The Plant Bag allows them to easily carry a plant around as they walk with a fan at the top of the bag that pulls air through the roots. These roots then filter and produce clean air which the child can breath through a mask. The bag not only provides huge health benefits for children living in polluted cities but also educates them about the science of air-purifying plants. You can watch a video explaining how it works here.
