The Lowline will be the world’s first underground park. It is a plan to use innovative solar technology to illuminate a historic trolley terminal on the Lower East Side of New York City. Their vision is a stunning underground park, providing a beautiful respite and a cultural attraction in one of the world’s most dense and exciting urban environments. The Lowline’s mission is to create more of the green space we all need. The Lowline aims to build a new kind of public space – one that highlights the features of a disused building while introducing cutting-edge solar technology and design, enabling plants and trees to grow underground. The result will be an innovative display of how technology can transform cities in the 21st century. Along the way, they intend to draw the community into the design process itself, empowering a new generation of Lower East Siders to help build a new bright spot in a dense urban environment. In 2 years, The Lowline Lab will continue to showcase The Lowline’s innovative solar technology and the potential of new, year-round public space to tens of thousands of people in the months to come. In 2017, The Lowline aims to have completed negotiations with the MTA and the City to build and operate the underground park. In 2020, The Lowline will be open for all to enjoy.
