Cheonggyecheon River

An urban recovery project has transformed the Cheonggyecheon River in Seoul, and the pathway lining it from a toxic, no-go area into a walkway teeming with life and biodiversity. For many years the river functioned as little more than a sewer encased in concrete, disconnected from the public. Today it is a popular park and corridor connecting the east and west parts of the city. Despite receiving criticism for vast costs, the project has seen a significant reduction in air pollution, increased biodiversity and improved quality of life in the surrounding area.
