Green Concrete

Researchers from The Structural Technology Group at Barcelona’s Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) have developed a new kind of biological concrete which encourages the rapid growth of vegetation such as moss and lichens without damaging the structure of a building. Thanks to this ‘living’ coating, buildings not only look beautiful but also absorb CO2 while doing it. This biological surface also acts as insulation, becoming a natural thermal regulator throughout the year. As an extremely versatile material, the people at UPC hope that this new green concrete will be useful in the renovation of existing buildings. This will help transform the cityscape by filling it with grassy façades that change colour with the seasons.
