Researchers at MIT have made a fascinating discovery in a study using spinach that brings new meaning to the term ‘Superfood’. By embedding the leaves with carbon nanotubes, the plant can be transformed into a hybrid organism able to detect particular chemicals often found in explosives. The nanotubes emit fluorescent signals picked up by an infrared camera, reverting the data back to a computer and alerting the user via email. The application of technology in this way breaks the boundaries of communication between plants and humans as has never been seen before.
